D2C shop with a heat scale on every jar and Tuesday shipping baked into checkout. The client’s name, branding and web addresses have been changed in all screens.
The challenge

Brand identity and direct-to-consumer shop for a small-batch chilli label.

The family sold out every weekend market but had no brand beyond a hand-written label. Stockists wanted barcodes, consistent packaging and a website they could point customers to, and a supermarket buyer had asked for samples.

They cook in 300-jar batches on Sundays in a rented central kitchen, so the shop had to sell out gracefully rather than promise stock that didn’t exist. A food-business grant covered part of the branding and packaging work.

What we did

Our approach

  1. A name-led identityThe wordmark and monogram lean on the idea of a weekly cook-up, so it goes on every lid.
  2. A heat scale people useFive chillies printed on every lid and product page. It became the most-asked-about part of the packaging.
  3. Batch-aware shopEach Sunday batch has a fixed quantity. When it sells out, the shop takes pre-orders for the next one instead.
  4. Stockist kitShelf talkers, a one-page sell sheet and product photos, all in the same system.
Brand guidelines: logo, palette, type and the five-chilli heat scale.
In hindsight

What we’d do differently

The first print run of lids used a red that looked right on screen and brown in the jar. We now ask for physical proofs on the actual packaging, not just paper.

Results
14Neighbourhood stockists within a year
58%Of batches sold out before Tuesday shipping
3×Monthly revenue compared with market-only sales
Client
“People pick up the jar and smile before they read anything. That is exactly what we wanted.”
